A practical checklist from a Woodbury, MN studio: the page structure, entity signals, and schema that get a local business named inside AI answers.

When someone asks an AI assistant "who is a good remodeler near Woodbury," the answer names two or three businesses. The ones it names are the ones whose websites state plainly who they are, what they do, where they operate, and why they can be trusted, in a structure a model can read. Here is the checklist we run for clients, in order.

## Step 1: Say who you are in one extractable sentence

Every key page needs a first paragraph a model could quote alone: business name, service, and area in plain declarative language. "Northline Heating and Air is a Woodbury, Minnesota HVAC company offering same-day furnace and AC repair across the east metro" beats three paragraphs of brand story.

## Step 2: Answer real questions on the page

Models retrieve question and answer pairs. Put the questions your buyers actually type as headings, with a direct answer in the first sentence beneath: cost, timeline, service area, what happens on the first visit. If the answer needs the surrounding page to make sense, it will not be quoted.

## Step 3: Make the machine-readable page match the human one

Structured data is how you state facts unambiguously. At minimum: LocalBusiness with name, address, phone, hours, and service area, plus FAQ and Service markup where the content exists. Google documents the formats in its structured data guide, and the same markup serves the AI engines reading your pages.

## Step 4: Keep your identity consistent everywhere

Same name, address, and phone on the website, the Google Business Profile, and every directory. Models hedge when the entity is inconsistent, and a hedge means someone else gets named.

## Step 5: Give crawlers explicit permission

Check robots.txt for GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot. Blocking them blocks the distribution channel this whole checklist exists for. An llms.txt file that summarizes the business helps the models that read it.

## Step 6: Test with real prompts, monthly

Ask the assistants the questions your customers ask, note whether you appear, how you are described, and whether it is accurate. This is the measurement loop; rankings do not capture it.

### How long does it take to show up in AI answers?

Structural fixes surface in weeks as pages get recrawled; consistent presence in answers usually takes a few months of the site being the clearest source for your service and area. It compounds, because most local competitors have done none of this.

## Step 7: Earn the trail models verify against

Models cross-check what a website claims against what the rest of the web says. Google reviews with real text, a complete Business Profile, consistent directory listings, and the occasional local press mention or chamber page all corroborate the entity. You cannot fake this trail and you do not need much of it; a five-star profile with forty real reviews outweighs a hundred directory spam links.

## What not to do

- Do not stuff city names into pages that have nothing city-specific to say; models summarize the page, and a padded page summarizes as padding.
- Do not buy reviews or mark up ratings you assign yourself; self-serving review schema is ignored at best and penalized at worst.
- Do not block AI crawlers in robots.txt while asking why AI never mentions you. It is the same channel.
- Do not publish forty thin FAQ pages in a weekend. Coverage matters, but a page that answers nothing teaches models the site answers nothing.
### Do traditional rankings still matter?

Yes. AI answers draw heavily from the same pages that rank, and Google still delivers most local traffic. The point of this checklist is that the same structural work now serves both surfaces; it is one discipline, not a second SEO to buy.

### What does this cost to get done?

The structural pass on an existing small business site is days of work, not months: schema, robots policy, answer-first rewrites on the pages that sell, and profile consistency. The compounding part is content coverage, which can be built a page at a time. Ask whoever quotes it to show you the prompt tests they will run afterward; if there is no measurement step, it is not a GSO engagement.

## What this looks like done

Our own site is the test bed: 95 pages, every one carrying LocalBusiness and breadcrumb schema, FAQ markup on the pages that answer questions, an explicit robots policy for 17 AI crawlers, an llms.txt that links every page, and a markdown twin of each page for the models that prefer plain text. That structure is why we can measure prompt-level visibility instead of guessing at it, and it is exactly the structure we install for clients, scaled to the size of their site.

Print this list, hand it to whoever runs your website, and ask which steps are done. Most Twin Cities businesses will find the honest answer is one of seven, which is also why the opportunity is still wide open.

We productize this as GSO engineering: the structure built into the site, then measured against real prompts.
